I am a sculptor and painter based in Potomac, Maryland. My studio is in my home, with a kiln room in the garage, where I hand-build stoneware and fire every piece myself.
 

I trained as a painter at the Corcoran and spent years working in acrylic and mixed media on canvas. Clay arrived as an extension of that practice. I still think like a painter when I glaze: building translucent layers, letting one color sit beneath another, watching how a surface changes as light moves over it. The difference in clay is that the surface has real depth. Forms rise off the panel, cast their own shadows, and hold glaze in their hollows.
 

My wall panels set hand-built ceramic elements into painted, textured grounds. My freestanding sculptures are built in stoneware, the largest constructed in stacked sections that stand three to five feet tall. My newest work, Illumination, is a series of ceramic lamps, pendants and chandeliers shaped around the way light travels over a glazed surface.

I live with an inherited nerve tremor, and I have long let it into the work rather than resist it. In clay, the slight unsteadiness of my hand stays visible in every pinched edge and pressed mark, a record of the making.

 

All works are original and one of a kind which celebrate those imperfections that comes with mark making showing the presence of the human hand.
