Gathered

Grasses, seed heads, thistle blooms, and broad chartreuse leaves rise against a pale, quiet ground: gathered, held, examined. Gathered is the most considered work in the Selvage series, its composition spare where the others are immersive, its attention close and deliberate. Pink flower spikes and dark arching stems with red-edged leaves press against one another like specimens laid out for study, yet the painting breathes with the looseness of the field they came from. This is a painting about the act of looking; of picking up what the wild offers and finding, in the holding of it, something like wonder.
