In this painting, I capture a small pocket of summer calm: a young woman in a light dress, barefoot on a picnic blanket beneath a tree, absorbed in her book. She leans on her elbow as she reads, relaxed and unguarded, as though the world has briefly narrowed to the page in front of her.
Behind her, the city landscape sits in the distance, present, but softened by separation. I love the quiet tension between these two spaces: the intimate shelter of shade and the wider, bustling life beyond. The tree becomes a kind of threshold, holding a private moment in the foreground while the city remains a distant companion.
For me, this work is about the gentle luxury of pause, about choosing stillness inside a world that keeps moving. It’s a reminder that rest can be an act of presence, and that even in the shadow of a city, we can find a place to breathe, to read, and to simply be.
