Day Turning

In Day Turning, I depict a solitary man walking away from the viewer along a cobbled street on a cold autumn day. Seen only from behind, he becomes an open figure, one without a fixed identity, allowing the viewer to step into his place or imagine their own story unfolding with each step forward. His movement is quiet and unhurried, suggesting reflection rather than destination.

The street is divided into two worlds. On one side, old‑style lamplight glows warmly beside trees that have shed their leaves, the ground scattered with traces of the season’s passing. On the other, older architectural buildings stand firm and enduring, offering a sense of history and structure. I was drawn to the tension and balance between these elements, nature and architecture, softness and solidity, change and continuity.

Although the setting suggests cold air and late autumn, I chose to work in warm oranges and yellows. For me, these colors carry a sense of memory, comfort, and inner warmth, transforming the chill of the moment into something intimate and human. Light becomes less about illumination and more about emotion, about holding warmth even as the day turns.

Day Turning is ultimately about transition: the shift from day toward night, from one season to the next, and from one inner state to another. By placing the viewer behind the figure, I invite them not just to observe, but to follow, to walk into that quiet, reflective space where movement and stillness meet, and where change feels gentle rather than abrupt.
