The Third Presence
In this painting, I show a man and a woman walking hand in hand beneath a bridge, moving away from the viewer and toward a light-filled space ahead. Their figures are quiet and connected, their closeness expressed not through faces or gestures, but through the simple certainty of their joined hands. By turning their backs to us, I wanted to leave their identities open, less about who they are, and more about what they represent together.

The sun lies ahead of them, casting their shadows back toward the viewer. Those shadows stretch across the ground like traces of where they have been, while their bodies move forward into what is still unfolding. I was drawn to this contrast between presence and absence, between what lingers behind us and what pulls us forward.
The woman holds a hat against her head, a small, intimate gesture that suggests wind, movement, and the physical reality of the moment. It adds a sense of tenderness and care, an instinctive act that speaks quietly of protection and awareness. Ahead of them, there is a hint of water, just visible, offering a sense of openness and flow beyond the shelter of the bridge.
For me, this painting is about companionship through transition. The bridge becomes a threshold, neither here nor there, while light, shadow, and water suggest passage, reflection, and continuity. By placing the viewer behind the couple, I invite them to witness not a destination, but a shared journey: one shaped by trust, forward motion, and the quiet strength of walking together into the light.
